Dear Girls, Love Mom is based on a personal archive of letters written by my grandmother, to her daughters, between 1981 and 2000. In the book, the letters are edited to reveal only the date, salutation, final remarks, close, and signature. In edited form, the letters reveal a mother's love for her children, and an arc of change and growth. In full, they serve as a family archive, detailing both the significant and the mundane.
In an age where letter-writing has become a lost or inefficient form of communication, these are a reminder of the beauty and power of hand-written mail. Most of the letters in the archive were sent to multiple people—one original and several carbon copies. Recipients celebrated getting the original.
